Although it is a small state (representing just 1.56% of Mexico's total land area), Guanajuato has several well preserved colonial towns, as well as beautiful scenery.  Founded on its silver mines in the 16C, the eponymous capital city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

San Miguel de Allende - founded as San Miguel in 1542, this small city of 150,000 is 90 kms from Guanajuato.
