Dougga is the largest and most impressive Roman site in Tunisia, and lies some 85km west of Tunis.  It was already a major settlement by the 4C BC, and enjoyed great propsperity under the Romans from the 2C AD on.

El Djem - rather far from Dougga geographically being midway between Sousse and Sfax, but equally impressive as it rises up out of the desert which surrounds it on all sides.

El Djem - interior of the amphitheater.  Although only the sixth largest such structure in Roman times, it is much better preserved than the Coliseum in Rome.
